Sailing and Powerboat courses

We now have available a range of courses for adults, all of which have plenty of space. More details can be found on Adult Sailing and Adult Powerboat and Dinghy Instructor pages.

* Evening Youth Groups - still plenty of spaces *

Now open for new members

Rigging for a first sail

Neptune is trying to organise two evening youth groups again this year. Tuesdays are aimed at beginners, and near beginners, while Wednesdays are for improvers, so you will need to be at RYA Stage 2, or very near.

We have not reached the minimum number needed to run these groups, so we are delaying the start of the season for two or three weeks.

This will mean that the fees will be reduced, helping family finances at a difficult time. If you may be interested in joining one of these groups, please get in touch in good time. The groups will have limited numbers of places and you will need to be in Year 6 or higher (10 years of age) to join the group. We have kept fees low to encourage children to take part.

* Neptune Supporters' Group - Join us this season*

Sailing sessions next season

Neptune Sailing is a charity and needs occasional help with simple tasks such as recovering dinghies, tidying the site, simple boat maintenance and repairs.

We launched our supporters' group with some sailing sessions over five Sundays in September and October, hoping that local people would be keen to be involved. The sessions proved popular and several people enjoyed some good sailing in the unusually moderate weather.

We are making this a continuing project and hope that more keen locals will want to join us.

* New Season *

New Challenges

For Neptune, a significant concern this season is caused by the loss of many of our instruction and support team, who have moved on to higher education, or new jobs. Covid has meant that we have not been able to offer as much instruction work as previously, and individual development opportunities have been very restricted. We will offer another instructor training course in July. Without a steady stream of new team members, we will not be able to return to the full program of courses and summer school activities that we aspire to deliver.

We are particularly interested to hear from Dinghy Senior Instructors, even if they are only able to offer a small number of sessions. Opportunities are available to work with young people and adults. Sessions take place during late afternoons, evenings and weekends. For the summer holidays, we are keen to hear from confident Dinghy Instructors, who feel able to organise a small group session, on tidal waters, as part of a larger team. All of our courses aim to move students through the RYA Schemes and instructors are fully supported in delivering courses.

As we move into the post-Covid period, plans for sailing and powerboat courses are well advanced. Our regular school groups are already booked into their normal slots, and demand for places is high, as students are keen to enjoy their new freedoms, after two years of restrictions. We are hoping to return to offering both beginner and improver evening youth groups on different evenings. These have always been a great source of new instructors. We will have three new RS Zest dinghies arriving in the summer to support all of our sailors.

We are looking forward to getting back to more normal levels of activity and will include popular adult Dinghy Sailing courses. Requests for powerboat courses are arriving regularly and we will run a Safety Boat course at the start of the season. For those who are willing to help us occasionally, we are organising sessions for our supporters’ group again. These popular sessions are a great opportunity to meet new friends and enjoy sailing on the Orwell.

Many of our management team have been with us since 2012. We are keen to add further members to the team, who are willing to take on small roles. New team members need not be sailors, or powerboaters, as there are many other areas which need coordination.

Who are Neptune Sailing?

Rigging lots of dinghies

Neptune Sailing is based on the River Orwell at Woolverstone, near Ipswich. We have a large number of craft, of different types and provide a range of Dinghy Sailing and Powerboat training and assessment. During the season the centre is available to both young people and adults. We aim to provide high quality tuition, based on the RYA National schemes.

Neptune Sailing has been working independently, delivering quality water sports experiences, for the last six seasons. We have charitable status and are registered as a company limited by guarantee.

Our Youth Groups run on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings for Beginners, Improvers and Advanced skills and are open to all young people. They are very popular, so making an early approach regarding joining one of the groups is advisable.

Adult training courses are run mainly during weekends and cover the RYA Sailing Schemes to Level 3 and RYA Powerboat Level 1 and 2, as well as Safety Boat. We are happy to offer courses to groups and individuals at other times.

During the school holiday periods week-long courses are available for young people and these are very popular. The courses offer training from beginner Stage 1 to advanced skills Stage 4.
