Yet more return visitors!

Scouts take to the water again

Neptune Sailing welcomed back yet more Scouts from the local area over the weekend, ably led by a number of very enthusiastic leaders and coordinated by Keith Trevorrow. The group, comprising some of the 1st Debenham members, assembled in the building and were met by some of the County senior leaders. Kitted out in our distinctive centre blue gear they were ready to face the elements, only to find a very low tide!

As the water slowly returned, we were able to venture out into the river in Wayfarers and we made the trip along to Pinmill and back during the morning. Everybody seemed to be in charge and knowing what to do by the time lunch came along, so we moved on to Toppers in the afternoon for those who were continuing for the whole day. In fact one youngster decided to send his Mum home alone, preferring to stay for more! As the afternoon wore on, the levels of confidence were reaching the heights with lots of 'standing-up sailing' going on. And also lots of falling in!! The water temperature was described as 'moderate'!!! Eventually we returned to the shore, though some of the leaders did seem reluctant to do so. We'll be talking about coming back again next year soon.

Neptune Sailing can provide a wide range of exciting Outdoor Learning opportunities for schools and youth groups, designed to complement the school curriculum and generate an enthusiasm for learning. Outdoor learning activities can help promote aspects of personal development such as self-confidence, trust and teamwork, and improve problem-solving, decision-making and communication skills. The experience can be carried back to the classroom, providing a lasting influence on the development of young people.

Visiting groups can engage in sailing or powerboating sessions, ranging from 3 hour tasters, or full days, to a programme delivered over a number of weeks. Our aim is to tailor activity programmes specific to your group's need.

Scouts Link

Suffolk Scouts are building a strong link with Neptune Sailing, which is being coordinated by Keith Trevorrow. Two groups came to the centre in 2012 and enjoyed their visit very much. We are looking forward to working with Scouts during May during their camp at Hallowtree camp site, just across the river from us. We will be providing a range of sailing opportunities for the Scouts and hope to increase the number of groups visiting us further in 2013.

Facilities

The Centre has a large classroom with presentation and teaching aids and adjoining kitchen facilities. Powered support craft are available which can be used for river trips. There is also a grassed area adjacent to the centre and the main park and riverside paths are only a short walk away.

Neptune Sailing is located on the banks of the River Orwell in an area of Special Scientific Interest, which includes ancient woodland, and is the perfect environment to provide young people with safe and fun outdoor activities. The centre is ideally placed for groups planning activity days, educational visits, such as nature, environmental or fieldwork studies, or other cross-curricular activities, perhaps in combination with a water-sports session.

Neptune Sailing, as part of SWSA, is an approved Royal Yachting Association (RYA) training centre and all activities are supervised by instructors holding appropriate RYA coaching qualifications. All activities are covered by licences granted by the Adventure Activities Licensing Authority (AALA). Risk assessments are carried out and copies of our operating procedures are available on request. All activities are covered by public liability Insurance.
